Golf simulators or espresso bars?

Neither. Banks are building branches again, and what makes a visit worth it is a banker who helps customers think through their money. Here is how newer bankers build that confidence, without feeling pushy.

Why does the branch conversation matter again?

Banks are betting on branches. Chase set out to open more than 160 new ones in 2026. PNC plans more than 300 by 2030. By mid-2026 the industry had three straight quarters of net branch openings, the first such run since 2009.

Customers are not coming for routine banking. Only 3% of Gen Z name the branch as where they bank most. They come for help. The average checking customer keeps deposit accounts at three institutions. In 2025, more than a third of bank customers under 40 said they were looking for advice. And when customers get personalized advice, their satisfaction rises 195 points on a 1,000-point scale.

A banker who makes the customer feel seen and heard moves satisfaction more than a flat white.

Why do newer bankers feel pushy?

Because the conversation starts from the wrong goal. When the aim is the next product, every question sounds like a pitch, and customers can tell. Branch leaders tell us their newer bankers hold back: the question that would help feels personal, like prying. Asking it well, out loud, is a skill, and skills take practice.

Flip the goal. Solve the customer's problem. The deposit, the product and the relationship follow. The result is a consequence, not the aim.

What are the two problems in every visit?

The one the customer brings, and the one they do not know to ask about. Help with the first. Gently ask about the second.

The momentAskWhat they may not know to ask
A certificate is maturingWhat would you like this money to do next?Whether a goal, a ladder or easier access fits better
A wire or large transferWhat is the money for?A big life change ahead, or a scam to stop
A first account after a moveWhat does a typical month look like?Direct deposit, bill pay, an emergency cushion
A question about ratesWhen might you need this money?Whether the rate is really the priority

One good question is enough. It is a conversation, not a checklist.

How do newer bankers build confidence?

  • Their own words, not a script. Talking points for the moment, said the banker's way. Customers hear a script instantly.
  • Know what you can offer. A question is easier to ask when you know the help you could give.
  • Practice before the counter. Role play the moments above, with a manager listening.

How do you know it is working?

Confidence first: ask bankers how comfortable they feel. Then the relationship: products per customer, over months. Trust comes first. The business result follows it, never the other way round.
